After my disappointment with Midnight Eyes (A Love Everlasting Romance), it was lovely to get back to the Deborah Camp I had grown to love (her books, that is!). This is a modern-day romance, of two people who meet on a stormy night at a motel, have dinner, feel an instant mutual attraction, and then go on to have their feelings for each other challenged by Killian's (lady vet) job to investigate cruelty to one of Gus's (boss wrangler on a film set) horses. The story is not only about Killian and Gus, but about Gus's relationship with his nephew, Cody, his sister May's son, about May's love and problems with her son, and about a person's greed coming before acceptable behaviour, towards other people and towards animals. I will start with the fact that, as a group, I have really enjoyed Ms Camp's historical fiction novels. I've read at least 6 of them and found them to be poignant and honest storytelling. For example, specific books in the "Wild Heart" series were especially good. This is book is NOT good story telling. The protagonists were unbelievable and the "love" story was forced at best. Nothing about the people or the places rang true. I reiterate that Ms. Camp is a solid story teller and she does have some great books. Oklahoma Man is simply NOT one of them. In a world where our time is precious and some of us have to steal time to read, do not waste your time on this book!
A PLEASANT LOVE STORY; Not too mushy and it has a little mystery right in the middle. Excellent, easy to understand writing.
