After an attack on his village that leaves many dead and all the community in mourning, Galen is given a vision in a dream. He must give a warning to a young woman that she is in danger. He passes the information on through another dream but even so he is not able to get the young woman out of his head. He knows he must find her. But visions of beautiful young women aside, he and his companions are on a quest to apprehend and take revenge on those who killed his brother and left their village in ruins. He will not stop until the enemy is destroyed. It is his mandate from the elders and his personal goal. They will be avenged.Kaylena is also on a journey with her band of warriors. Given to her by her adoptive father, she is hunting for information. She will not rest until she finds the answers to the questions in her dreams. Who is she really. How did she come to be abandoned in the forest with nothing but a raven feather. An infant with neither clothing or blanket but clutching a feather in her hand was not only unusual but unheard of. Unable to trace her family the village took in her and she has been accepted as if she were one of. Even as she travels she feels an evil in the very fabric of the air. Something is happening. She has heard of villages being destroyed and evil prevailing in the land and she has charged herself with discovering the origins.
When they meet she is able to hide her feminity from Galen for only a short time. He is drawn to her in a way that is unexpected and she finds that she is unable to resist the call he has upon her heart. But while she holds her secrets of magic and unknown origin Galen also keeps secrets, one that will change the course of their relationship.
Given a prophecy they know that winning the battles is only the beginning of the road they must travel together. For they are charged with completing a circle. One that will bring power and a force never before seen. It is only with this circle that the evil in the land can be eradicated for good.
A young adult novel at its best, Cry of the Raven combines magic, healing, shape shifter and warriors in a war brought to them by an evil that has been unleashed. While it has some violence it is not the main focus of the story and is limited in scope. The romance is appropriate for young readers. This would be a good story from early teens to adults with late teens to early twenties being more closely the age of the protagonists.
Well written, good flow and a complex and interesting story make this a great read.
